MOSCOW, May 13 (RIA Novosti) – The United States and European countries have changed their stance on the Syrian civil war to a “more realistic” one, Syrian Deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil said in an interview aired on Monday by the Arabic-language Russia Today channel.
“I think that a shift has occurred in the US and European stances on the Syrian conflict,” the deputy premier said, adding that those states have “abandoned the previous policy of setting forth unacceptable and unrealistic conditions.”
“The present US and European stances are more realistic, as they take into account the true distribution of forces on the global and regional scale, as well as inside Syria,” he said.
He described the recent talks between US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as “a turning point in the changing of the US stance.”
After talks held on May 7, Lavrov announced that Russia and the US had agreed to hold an international conference aimed at facilitating a solution to the Syrian crisis through political dialogue between the Syrian government and opposition forces.
