MAKHACHKALA, May 24 (RIA Novosti) – Two suspected militants have been killed in the Russian North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, a Russian Interior Ministry spokesman said.
“A police squad was patrolling streets in the town of Khasavyurt on Thursday and stopped two suspicious men, who then opened fire and threw a grenade at policemen,” the spokesman said.
Four police officers were wounded as a result, he said.
“The suspects were pursued and killed on the outskirts of the town,” the spokesman said.
The Islamist insurgency, once confined largely to the republic of Chechnya, has spread across the North Caucasus in recent years. Attacks on security forces, police and civilians are reported regularly in the neighboring republics of Dagestan, Ingushetia and Kabardino-Balkaria.
