SOCHI, May 25 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday a more effective system was needed to protect intellectual property rights on the internet.
“Without defending intellectual [property] rights, a great damage will be done,” the Russian president said on Friday at a meeting to discuss the development of the country’s film industry.
Putin said that without effective protection, “only enthusiasts will stay [in Russia], others will leave to make movies where their rights are protected.”
Earlier on Friday, Putin vowed to continue supporting the domestic film industry, but called on Russian filmmakers to produce movies that promote patriotic and moral values.
Russia has done a lot to help produce and promote Russian films, with financing of the domestic movie industry rising from 528.6 million rubles ($16.9 million) in 2000 to over 6.6 billion rubles ($211 million) in 2013, Putin said.
