VLADIVOSTOK, May 27 (RIA Novosti) - Police in Russia’s Far Eastern Primorye Territory have launched a probe into the death of an inmate in a temporary detention facility, thought to have been caused by negligence, a spokesman for the regional police department said on Monday.
The inmate, convicted for car theft and waiting to be taken to prison, felt ill on Sunday and died about half and hour after doctors arrived.
“Police have launched a probe into the death of a 31-year-old detainee. They are to find out whether his death could be a result of negligence by the detention facility’s staff,” the spokesman said.
Doctors said the man suffered from numerous pre-existing conditions caused by excessive drinking. The cause of his death is yet to be officially established, but doctors mentioned liver disease as a likely cause.
