MEXICO CITY, June 9 (RIA Novosti) – Nine prisoners escaped and two guards were killed when armed gang members attacked a prison in Mexico's south-western Guerrero state, local authorities said on Sunday.
The attackers opened fire on prison guard towers early on Sunday before entering the prison’s territory and releasing several prisoners. A prison warden and a prisoner were also injured in the incident.
Media reports said the prison’s director ran away from the building when the attack occurred. A search operation for the prisoners involving a military helicopter is ongoing.
There were 158 prisoners inside the building at the time of the attack, local media reports said. Police have not revealed the names of the prisoners who have escaped.
