BEIRUT, June 9 (RIA Novosti) – The Syrian Army has launched a major offensive in Aleppo to retake the rebel-held northern city, the Al-Manar website said on Sunday.
The operation dubbed the Storm of the North started early on Sunday and the Syrian Army had several achievements in the following regions: Kafar Hamra, Haryatan, Andan, Hayyan, Sheikh Maqsood Syria, Bustan Al-Basha, Bustan Al-Qasr, and Al-Ameriya, on the outskirts of Aleppo, the report said.
Syrian forces backed by Hezbollah militants made a decisive victory on Wednesday in the strategic town of Qusair, which is close to the border with Lebanon.
Syria has been locked in an increasingly bloody civil war since demonstrations broke out against the Assad regime in March 2011. According to UN, about 80,000 people have been killed in the conflict.
