MOSCOW, June 10 (RIA Novosti) – All seven militants who staged an attack near Afghanistan's Kabul International Airport early on Monday morning have been killed in a security operation, Al Jazeera reported.

Two attackers blew themselves up with suicide vests while five others died in gun battles with the police which lasted several hours, the agency said, citing Kabul police chief Mohammad Ayoub Salangi.

Explosions and a subsequent gunfight broke out near Kabul International Airport after militants seized a nearby building under construction, Xinhua news agency reported earlier on Monday.

The militant Islamist Taliban group claimed responsibility for the attack, saying their target was the military wing of the airport, which houses a NATO headquarters.

All flights at Kabul airport were suspended during the attack. It was unclear whether facilities inside the airport were damaged.

The Taliban, which was toppled from power in a US-led campaign in Afghanistan in 2001, stages frequent attacks on provincial government officials, police and civilians and plants roadside bombs to target Afghan, and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops.

ISAF is preparing to withdraw from Afghanistan by the end of 2014, handing over responsibility for security in Afghanistan to local police and military forces.
