G-8 Backs UN Probe Into Alleged Chemical Weapons Use in Syria

LONDON, June 18 (RIA Novosti) – The G-8 statement on Syria goes further than anticipated in backing a United Nation investigation into the alleged use of chemical weapons in the country, British Prime Minister David Cameron stressed on Tuesday.

The G-8 countries agreed “to condemn the use of chemical weapons by anyone, and crucially to enable an unhindered UN investigation to establish the facts,” Cameron said, listing the seven key issues on Syria agreed at the G-8 at a news conference.

“This pledge was not expected here at the G-8. We discussed it last night, we agreed it last night and have written it down and agreed it today,” he stressed.

The communiqué issued today condemns “any use of chemical weapons in Syria” and urges “all parties to the conflict to allow access” to the UN investigating team in order for “an objective investigation into reports of use of chemical weapons,” to be conducted.

“We are determined that those who may be found responsible for the use of chemical weapons will be held accountable,” the communiqué says.
