MOSCOW, June 30 (R-Sport) - Hosts Russia earned their first win at the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Moscow on Sunday, beating Spain 17-7 in the quarterfinals of the third-tier bowl competition.
The victory that sets up a bowl semifinal against Uruguay, who earlier beat Tunisia 12-7.
Ilya Babaev opened the scoring with a try down the left before Igor Galinovsky ran one in through the middle. Just before the break, Spain’s Martin Heredia looked set for a try but inexplicably knocked on two yards short of the line.
Spain started the second half with a try for Pablo Feijoo, converted by Heredia, before Galinovsky made sure of the win with a rampaging run down the left.
Russia ended up the bowl after losing two pool games and drawing one, while Spain lost all three of their group games.
