KAZAN, Russia, July 1 (R-Sport) - The Russian flag has been ceremonially hoisted above the athletes' village in Kazan ahead of the University Games, which start Saturday.
A record 13,000 athletes from 162 countries are expected to compete in the capital of Russia's Tatarstan region in a competition that rivals the Olympics in terms of scale if not prestige.
Of the 64 venues hosting event, 30 were built specifically for the so-called Universiade, which runs July 6-17.
The athletes' village caters for 12,000 people and was also built specially for the games.
