MOSCOW July 7 (R-Sport) - Australian diver Samantha Mills won the first gold medal of the University Games in Kazan, Russia, on Sunday with victory in the one-meter springboard.
Mills won with a score of 281.40 points, a score that would not have been enough to make the podium in the same event at the last Universiade in Shenzhen two years ago.
Silver and bronze went to China, with Jia Dongjin second on 277.75 and Wang Liting third on 271.45.
Hopes of a first medal for hosts Russia were dashed as Svetlana Filippova came eighth and last on 235.50.
The Universiade runs through July 17.
