MOSCOW, July 12 (R-Sport) – Former Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti has signed a two-year contract with Russian hockey side Atlant Moscow Region.

Sanguinetti, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound defenseman, spent the last three seasons in the Hurricanes system but was not offered a new deal and moved to Russia as a free agent.

“Last season may be called the most successful in Sanguinetti’s career and today he has decided to try himself in the KHL,” a website statement said. “We wish him to make Atlant’s defensive line stronger.”

The 25-year-old American was picked in the first round of 2006 draft by the New York Rangers and debuted in December 2009.

After making only five appearances for the Rangers, he was traded to Carolina, where he alternated between the main team and its AHL affiliate Charlotte Checkers and registered six points in 40 NHL games.

Atlant finished eighth in the Western Conference last season, suffering a first-round playoff exit from SKA St. Petersburg.

On Friday, Atlant parted ways with forward Igor Ignatushkin, the team's third-highest scorer last season with 20 points from 50 games.

Ignatushkin, once a prospect for the Washington Capitals, has moved to Western Conference rivals Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod, his new team said in a website statement.
