MEXICO, July 14 (RIA Novosti) - A one-ton cow that fell through the roof of a house, crushed a sleeping man to death and nearly missed his wife in Caratinga, southeast Brazil, local media reported on Saturday.
According to preliminary data, the animal was grazing on a small hill right next to the roof of the house, and either walked there or fell on it on Wednesday night. The roof was made of asbestos and could not withstand the cow’s weight, sending the animal eight feet down right on the side of the bed where Joao Maria de Souza was sleeping.
De Souza, 45, died of massive internal bleeding in the local hospital, while still waiting for being examined by a doctor. His wife, who was sleeping next to him, was unharmed. The cow also received no apparent injuries.
“Being crushed by a cow is the last way you expect to leave this Earth,” Brazilian newspaper Hoje em Dia quoted de Souza’s brother-in-law as saying.
De Souza’s relatives do not blame the cow, believed to have escaped from the nearby farm. They believe that it the man’s injuries were not lethal and prompt medical aid could have probably saved his life.
Local police are investigating the incident to decide on whether the animal’s owner should be charged with involuntary manslaughter.
