KAZAN, July 17 (R-Sport) - Russia won gold medals in women's water polo, men's volleyball and men's basketball on the penultimate day of the 2013 World University Games, running their already enormous total to 151 and 285 overall.
Tuesday's haul means the host nation has won 25 percent of the 1,138 medals awarded to date. Japan is second with 84 medals overall and Ukraine sits third with 77.
Russia capped the eleventh day of the Universiade with an 81-74 win over Australia in the men's basketball final in front of what appeared to be a sold-out crowd inside Kazan's Basket Hall. In the game prior, Serbia knocked off Canada 87-74 for the bronze medal.
In water polo, Russia defeated silver medalist Hungary 18-11 while Italy pulled off a tight 6-5 victory over Canada to hold down bronze. Men's volleyball saw sweeps across the board with Russia beating Poland 3-0. Japan pulled off the same score over Ukraine for the bronze medal.
Russian gymnast Margarita Mamun, a rising star and Russian national champion, won gold medals in the women's individual clubs, individual hoop and individual ribbon as part of the country's gold medal sweep in artistic gymnastics. Ukraine picked up five artistic gymnastic bronze medals on Tuesday as well as two silver.
At the Aquatics Center, Russian swimmer Vladimir Morozov struck gold in his signature category - the 50m freestyle - while countryman Andrey Grechin placed second and Ukraine's Andrii Govorov third.
Russia's women's 4x100 medley relay team set a Universiade record on Tuesday with a 3:58.05 finish, smoking silver medalist Italy by 4.57 seconds. The Americans finished 0.10 seconds back of Italy for bronze.
Meanwhile, in football, France beat Great Britain in a thrilling 3-2 gold-medal final after Fanch Weyders broke a tie in the second extra time. Japan shut out Russia 3-0 for an easy bronze.
The 27th Universiade ends on Wednesday with finals in men's and women's rugby sevens, shooting, open water swimming and men's water polo.
