This year, Kazan hosted the World University Games from July 5 to 17 at the Kazan Arena. Russia secured an overall victory in the medal count, winning 155 golds.

Many facilities were built in Kazan for its millennium anniversary in 2005. They are, for example, the Kazan subway system, the Millennium Museum, the Qolsarif Mosque, and the Millennium Bridge.
