WASHINGTON, July 23 (RIA Novosti) – Russian-Kazakh movie director Timur Bekmambetov is plotting his first US TV venture with a concept based on L. Frank Baum’s Oz books, the entertainment website Deadline.com has reported.
Bekmambetov will create “Warriors of Oz” for the SyFy network, a channel specializing in fantasy and science fiction programming, Deadline said in an article posted Monday and billed as an exclusive, quoting no sources.
The show is described by Deadline as “a fantasy-action reimagining of the classic story in which a warrior from present day Earth is transported to a post-apocalyptic future Oz where he must team up with three other warriors, Heartless, Brainless, and Coward, in order to defeat the evil Wizard who has enslaved the land.”
Bekmambetov shot to global fame following the 2004 release of the Russian vampire blockbuster “Night Watch” and its sequel, “Day Watch.” His Hollywood credits include “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,” and “Wanted.”
Bekmambetov will executive produce and perhaps direct “Warriors of Oz,” Deadline said.
