CHITA/MOSCOW, July 23 (RIA Novosti) – A series of fatal traffic accidents involving police officers were reported across Russia Tuesday, with at least one killed and three injured.
A policeman driving in Moscow Region hit a 15-year-old girl riding a bicycle in the opposite direction Monday. The girl died at the scene, the region’s police reported Tuesday. It was not immediately clear whether the driver, who was off duty at that time of the accident, could have avoided the collision. He was reportedly sober at the time.
In a separate incident in Russia’s Urals region, a drunk off-duty policeman crashed into two cyclists late Monday, local police reported Tuesday. The two victims in the accident were rushed to the hospital with injuries. The unnamed policeman, born in 1982, has been fired, the police said.
A third tragedy took place on a Siberian highway on Tuesday, when a police driver knocked down a 52-year-old pedestrian walking along the roadside some 68 kilometers (42 miles) from the region’s main city of Chita. The driver fled the scene but was soon detained.
The pedestrian was taken to hospital with serious head injuries, local police branch reported.
