VELIKY NOVROGORD, July 26 (RIA Novosti) – A man who went fishing in a river in northwestern Russia’s Novgorod Region found an active 100-kilogram bomb from World War II, emergency officials said Friday.
The bomb, which had been lying on a riverbank about 200 meters from a residential area, was defused by a squad of army munitions experts, the Emergency Situations Ministry said in an online statement, adding that no one was hurt.
The Novgorod Region saw fierce fighting during the war, and a large number of unexploded munitions are believed to still remain at the former battlefields.
More than 50,000 such munitions have been uncovered in the region since 1998.
