MOSCOW, July 28 (RIA Novosti) – A policeman who was severely beaten by a group of 20 to 25 people as he and fellow officers detained a suspected rapist is set to undergo brain surgery, the Moscow Police Department said Sunday.
The brawl occurred on Saturday at a market in western Moscow, police said, adding that officers managed to detain the suspected rapist as well as just one other person: his wife.
She reportedly punched and kicked one of the officers who was taking her husband into custody at the Matveyevsky food market. The husband is believed to have sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl.
Moscow police chief Anatoly Yakunin has pledged to bring to justice all the perpetrators in the attack.
