The 1025th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus was celebrated in Ukraine on Sunday, July 28. Traditionally on this day the Russian Orthodox Church commemorates Prince Vladimir, who baptized Rus. Over 5,000 people attended a patriarchal service in the Kiev Pechersk Monastery, according to the tourism office of the Kiev Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve.

The Baptism of Rus took place in 988 and is associated with the name of Prince Vladimir, called Vladimir the Great by historians, St Vladimir by the Church and, and Vladimir the Red Sun by the people.
The first official celebration of the Baptism of Rus was held in 1888. The celebrations took place in Kiev: on the eve of the anniversary St Volodymyr's Cathedral was laid down, a monument to Bogdan Khmelnitsky was opened and a ceremonial service was held.
On Saturday July 27, Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Kiev and participated in the prayer service commemorating the 1025th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus along with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti and Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic.
