Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has discovered a large cache of homemade explosives in the capital of Russia's troubled North Caucasus Republic of Dagestan, the National Anti-Terrorism Committee said Tuesday.

MOSCOW, July 30 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has discovered a large cache of homemade explosives in the capital of Russia's troubled North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, the National Anti-Terrorism Committee said Tuesday.

The FSB received the information that led them to the potential bombs after detaining Monday the leader of the Buinaksk group, Ilmudin Kaibekov, the National Anti-Terrorism Committee said.

About 50 kilograms (110 pounds) of TNT equivalent, stored in five paint jars and two metal pipes, was found during a search of a property belonging to the state fishing agency in the Dagestan capital of Makhachkala, according to the National Anti-Terrorism Committee.

Little is known about Ilmudin Kaibekov, or the Buinaksk group that the National Anti-Terrorism Committee said he led. The Buinaksk region of Dagestan lies to the west of Makhachkala.

But the Investigative Committee told Russian media July 7 that the Buinaksk group was led by Akhmed Tseretelov and Isa Kadyrov, following a shoot-out with security forces in which it was reported that one rebel fighter from the Buinaksk group was killed. The name of Kaibekov was apparently not mentioned at that time.

The death or capture of a leader of the Buinaksk group has been reported by Russian media citing security service sources at least twice in recent years, including in 2007 and 2010.

An Islamist insurgency, that originated in the republic of Chechnya after a series of bloody post-Soviet separatist wars, has spread across the North Caucasus in recent years. Attacks on security forces, police and civilians occur regularly in Dagestan.
