MOSCOW, July 30 (R-Sport) – Stanley Cup winner Tim Brent of Canada has joined Russian hockey side Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod, the KHL team announced on Tuesday.
Brent, a 6-foot center, moves to Russia as a free agent after his two-year contract with the Carolina Hurricanes expired on July 1.
The details of the 29-year-old’s KHL contract were not revealed.
The Canadian was the No. 37 overall pick in the 2002 NHL draft by the Anaheim Ducks, but finally managed to make the team only in 2006-07, when the Ducks won their first Stanley Cup.
However, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins the next season and struggled to get NHL ice time for three seasons before finally becoming a regular starter with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
He spent a total of seven seasons in the NHL, scoring 48 points in 207 appearances.
With Brent signing, Torpedo has filled up their quota of five foreigners, as the Canadian forward joins his compatriot Wojtek Wolski, Finnish defenseman Juuso Hietanen and forwards Jarkko Immonen and Sakari Salminen. Torpedo finished 11th and failed to qualify for the KHL playoffs.
