MOSCOW, July 31 (R-Sport) – London Olympic champion heptathlete Jessica Ennis-Hill is to miss the Moscow world championships next month due to an Achilles injury.
Ennis has been struggling with the tendon since her victory a year ago and on Wednesday gave up hope of being able to recover in time for the August 10-18 event at Luzhniki Stadium.
“Up until now we have been focusing on managing the pain so I can train and get myself in shape to go out there to win in Moscow – which has meant not focusing on finding a cure for the injury,” Ennis was quoted as saying at the British Athletics Federation website. “The time has now come to stop chasing fitness and look to cure the problem.”
The 27-year-old made her decision after competing at the Anniversary Games on Saturday, where she competed underwhelmingly in two events – the 100-meter hurdles, where she finished fourth, and the long jump, where she finished eighth.
“I am so glad I got to compete in London last weekend as it gave me a clear picture of where I am – and it is definitely not where I want to be both regarding pain and also form,” Ennis added.
The statement came a day after her main rival and reigning world champion Tatyana Chernova missed the Russian roster due to a knee injury she picked up at the national championships last week.
