ANKARA, July 31 (RIA Novosti) - The Turkish Foreign Ministry denied earlier media reports that Turkey froze a number of agreements, which were signed with Egypt last year, the ministry said in a statement.
Turkish daily Sabah reported on Tuesday that Turkey froze over 25 agreements signed by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan during his visit to Cairo last November.
“Such reports are ungrounded,” the statement said. “The agreements signed recently between Turkey and Egypt are in the stage of coordination in line with the schedule. The agreements, which already came into force, remain active.”
In early July, the Egyptian army deposed former President Mohamed Morsi, who narrowly won the country’s first free presidential election last June with 51.7 percent of the vote.
The removal of Morsi, whose current whereabouts remain unknown, came following mass nationwide protests against the rule of the Islamist president. In mid-July Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan slammed the military coup in Egypt as “illegitimate.”
