WASHINGTON, August 1 (RIA Novosti) – The acclaimed and controversial Russian artist Slava Mogutin will showcase his new work, “In the Name of Love,” at the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art from Friday through Sept. 21 according to the museum’s website.
The exhibit consists of 24 portraits, and will appear alongside collaborative work with another artist. Mogutin’s photography is frequently voyeuristic in tone, though his more recent work “hinders the viewer’s ability to see and decipher an image” according to an essay by Eyemazing Magazine, a prestigious journal of art photography, and posted on Mogutin’s website.
Mogutin was a journalist in Moscow in the early 1990s, where he earned notoriety as the only openly gay personality in the Russian media and was charged with several crimes. In 1994, he made international headlines when he attempted to register the first same-sex marriage in Russia; this led to more hostility from the Russian authorities, according to the artist’s website.
Granted political asylum in the US in 1995, Mogutin has since worked as both a visual artist and a writer. In 2000, he won Russia’s prestigious Andrei Bely prize for poetry.
