PYATIGORSK, August 3 (RIA Novosti) - One police officer was killed and three injured in Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, the republic’s Interior Ministry said Saturday.
The police were attacked as they tried to stop a passing car at a checkpoint near the village of Pervomaiskoye in the republic’s Kayakent district, a ministry spokesman told RIA Novosti.
A manhunt has been launched for the attackers.
The Islamist insurgency, once confined largely to the republic of Chechnya, has spread across the North Caucasus in recent years. Attacks on security forces, police and civilians are reported regularly in the neighboring republics of Dagestan, Ingushetia and Kabardino-Balkaria.
