BARCELONA, August 4 (R-Sport) –A day after breaking the women’s 50m breaststroke world record only to see it smashed by Lithuanian prodigy Ruta Meilutyte, Russia’s Yulia Yefimova exacted revenge by winning the gold medal at the World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona on Sunday.
Yefimova, 21, clocked a time of 29.52 seconds in the women's 50m breaststroke, narrowly defeating the 16-year-old Meilutyte by .07 seconds. Jessica Hardy of the United States won bronze with a time of 29.80 seconds.
Meilutyte holds the 50m breaststroke world record with a time of 29.48 seconds, which she achieved in the semifinal Saturday.
The 50m gold is Yefimova’s second breaststroke title of the world championships after she took the 200m gold on Friday.
A series of women's swimming world records have been smashed in the ongoing championships in Barcelona. Meilutyte set the fastest 100m breaststroke time ever with 1 minute 4.35 seconds on Wednesday and Denmark's Rikke Pedersen clocked 2:19.11 in the 200m breaststroke semifinal on Thursday.
Another women's record was set by U.S. swimmer Katie Ledecky, 16, who registered 15:36.53 in the 1,500m freestyle on Tuesday.
