Back in the 19th century, Russian travelers were enchanted by the local scenery. The valley rises from 2,000 m to 3,200 m. For about 130-160 days a year, it is covered by about 70 cm of snow.
The main occupation of the locals is the individual production of eco-friendly dairy products that they make from mare’s milk: kumis (an alcoholic beverage), qurut (hard pressed cheese) and ayran (a yoghurt drink).
