MOSCOW, August 10 (R-Sport) - Britain's Mo Farah put a crown on his status as one of the world's top long-distance runners by winning gold in the men's 10,000m at the world athletics championships in Moscow on Saturday.
Farah, who waited until the 23rd-minute mark before taking the lead, finished with a season-best time of 27:21.71 minutes. He dipped back into third place with two laps remaining, retook the lead at the 9,600m mark and held off his challengers with an inspired sprint over the final 400m.
He was roughly nine seconds faster than his gold-medal performance at the London 2012 Olympics - but slightly slower than the 27:14.07 minutes he needed for silver at the Daegu world championships two years ago.
Ethiopia's Ibrahim Jeilan, the Daegu gold medalist, finished second on Saturday, clocking a time of 27:22.23 minutes. Kenyan Paul Tanui, who led for much of the race's early going, took bronze at 27:22.61 minutes.
Farah's training partner, American Galen Rupp, who finished second in London, slipped off the podium with a fourth-place time of 27:24.39 minutes.
