MAKHACHKALA, August 11 (RIA Novosti) - A suspected militant has been killed in a special operation in the Russian North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, a spokesman for the regional department of the Russian Investigative Committee said Sunday.
“During an operation in the Dagestani village of Stalskoye at about midnight, law enforcers spotted a group of militants,” the spokesman said.
“In a short clash, one militant was killed, and another one escaped,” he said.
The Islamist insurgency, once confined largely to the republic of Chechnya, has spread across the North Caucasus in recent years. Attacks on security forces, police and civilians are reported regularly in the neighboring republics of Dagestan, Ingushetia and Kabardino-Balkaria.
