MOSCOW, August 14 (RIA Novosti) – A former police crime squad head in Moscow Region faces trial for allegedly bribing a suspect to give him Apple smartphones and computers in exchange for dropping a case against him, the regional Investigative Committee said Wednesday.
“According to the investigation, the police major misled an accused person about his powers and proposed the suspect gave him four iPhone 5 smartphones and three Apple notebooks … in exchange for releasing the accused person from criminal liability,” the Investigative Committee said in a statement.
The police major was caught red-handed in February 2013 while receiving two iPhone 5 smartphones from the person under investigation. Investigators estimated the total value of the gadgets at 400,000 rubles ($12,000).
The major is accused of “an attempted fraud by abusing his powers." He has been fired from the police, the Moscow Region Interior Department said.
