NALCHIK, August 14 (RIA Novosti) – A Russian senator died in a car crash in the south of the country Wednesday morning, a spokesman for the regional Interior Ministry said.

Albert Kazharov, a senator from Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, died in a head-on collision, the spokesman said. He was believed to be 48 years old.

“At about 5:17 a.m. Moscow time [1:17 GMT], a Lada Priora and Gaz-3102 (Volga) car collided head-on on the 418th km of the Kavkaz federal highway,” the spokesman said.

The crash killed both the driver of the Volga car and his passenger, senator Kazharov. The driver and passenger of the Lada were taken to the hospital in serious condition, the spokesman said.

The car in which the senator was traveling is thought to have crossed over into the lane for oncoming traffic, the republic’s Interior Ministry said.

“The collision of the Gaz-3102 and Lada Priora cars occurred on the latter’s traffic lane. The circumstances and causes of the accident will only be known after the ongoing investigation is complete,” Kabardino-Balkaria traffic police chief Yury Begidov said.

Kabardino-Balkaria head Arsen Kanokov has expressed his condolences to the family of Kazharov, who represented the interests of Kabardino-Balkaria in the Federation Council, the upper house of the Russian parliament.
