MOSCOW, August 16 (RIA Novosti) – At least 60 people were killed in Egypt on Friday in clashes between supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi and security forces, adding to a death toll that has already exceeded 600, media reports said.
The BBC reported that 38 people were killed in and around Cairo on Friday. The BBC and The Associated Press reported that at least 60 were killed in clashes around the country that day.
Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood pledged on Friday to hold a week of daily rallies across the country.
Morsi narrowly won the May 2012 presidential election, which followed a revolution that ousted his authoritarian predecessor, Hosni Mubarak. But Morsi was removed office in July in a military coup that came after months of street protests by opponents.
Morsi is currently under house arrest, which on Thursday was extended until September 15, local media reported.
The presidential ouster has polarized the country, with Morsi’s supporters replacing his opponents in the streets. The military has declared a nationwide state of emergency in an attempt to stop the violence.
