WASHINGTON, August 16 (RIA Novosti) – A renowned US ballet company will celebrate the centennial of the scandalous Paris premier of Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring,” by staging four performances dedicated to “Russian Masters” past and present in September, according to an entertainment news portal.
The Chicago-based Joffrey Ballet, one of most prestigious ballet companies in the United States, will stage Vaslav Nijinsky’s choreography of “The Rite of Spring,” which outraged Parisian ballet enthusiasts upon its debut in 1913, Broadway World reported this week.
“Allegro Brilliante,” “a study in brilliance” choreographed by Georgian-born George Balanchine to music by Tchaikovsky will also feature, as will two performances choreographed by Yuri Possokhov, a former principal dancer at the Bolshoi Theater who is currently choreographer in residence at the San Francisco Ballet, according to the Joffrey Ballet website.
“Russian Masters” will run September 19-22 at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University in downtown Chicago.
