MOSCOW, August 17 (RIA Novosti) - Police officers have discovered 40 pythons in a motel room in the Canadian city of Brantford, local police service said in a statement on Friday.
The snakes were “ranging in size from 1 foot to 4.5 feet” and were kept in plastic storage containers, police said.
“The snakes were not being suitably cared for and were in distress,” the statement reads. “After a visit to the veterinarian it is expected the snakes will be fine.”
The Star reported, citing a motel manager, that the snakes had belonged to a local couple evicted by their landlord. The landlord also informed police that his former tenants had taken their snakes with them to the motel.
According to the manager, the couple had only stayed in the room for one night. They were out for a dinner when police arrived.
Owning a python is illegal in Brantford as it contravenes the City’s Animal Control Bylaw.
In a separate incident which took place ten days earlier, a 100-pound African rock python escaped from its enclosure and asphyxiated two brothers aged four and six who were sleeping in an apartment above an exotic pet store in Campbellton, New Brunswick.
