MOSCOW, August 18 (RIA Novosti) – Police in Russia’s southern region opened a criminal case Sunday over a suspected attack on three opposition party activists ahead of the September vote.
Three activists of A Just Russia were assailed by unknown while guarding the party’s campaign banner in the Kalmykia Republic’s city of Elista on Saturday night, police said on Sunday. Two of the men were taken to hospital with stab wounds.
The local party branch said earlier that the three men were attacked while sitting in car guarding the campaign banner near a roadway. According to Just Russia representatives, unknown had tried to paint over the billboard put up ahead of the September 8 election to the region’s legislature.
Son of the party's branch leader was reportedly among the wounded.
