ARKHANGELSK, August 20 (RIA Novosti) – Police are searching for the mother of a newborn baby whose dead body was found in a park in Russia’s northern city of Arkhangelsk, the local investigative committee said.
“At approximately 8:00 a.m. the body of a newborn baby girl showing signs of a violent death was found in a trashcan in a park near Terekhin square in Arkhangelsk,” the statement said.
The baby was likely born on either Sunday or Monday, the statement said.
A similar incident was reported on Monday in the Volga area city of Penza, when a woman found a newborn baby boy in a plastic bag next to a garbage container near a local theater.
Doctors in Penza said the newborn boy was “very weak” and his condition was moderately critical. A search is underway for the baby’s mother.
In November 2011, Russian officials announced plans to install “baby boxes” that new mothers can use to anonymously and safely drop off unwanted newborns.
The Change One Life charity says that baby boxes have been installed in 11 Russian cities as of December 2011.
