MOSCOW, August 20 (R-Sport) – Former Russian international football forward Roman Adamov has found himself in professional limbo, playing voluntarily with an amateur club sponsored by Taganrog Poultry Farm.
Only five years ago, Adamov was part of Russia's extraordinary bronze medal-winning squad at Euro 2008. Now - having slipped down the pecking order - he dresses for a team that puts players on the pitch thanks to poultry in the pen.
"My friends are playing there, so I'm helping them play for fun," the 31-year-old told R-Sport on Tuesday. "Any game is better than a training session. At the moment, my main goal is staying in good physical shape."
Adamov has been unemployed since July, when his one-year contract with the Czech side Viktoria Plzen expired and the team decided not to extend the agreement after an unimpressive season. Adamov landed one goal in six matches and suffered an ankle injury in April that sidelined him until the end of the season.
With Taganrog, Adamov has spent three games in the non-professional Rostov Region championships, scoring one goal.
He has two weeks to find a new club before the Russian Premier League transfer window closes on September 2. Adamov told R-Sport he was ready to hold negotiations only with top-tier sides, stating he had no intention of playing in the lower divisions.
In his 11-year Premier League career, Adamov scored 47 goals in 159 appearances and was the league's top scorer in 2007 with the now-defunct FC Moscow.
