MOSCOW, August 22 (RIA Novosti) - Russian tennis superstar Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from the upcoming US Open tournament due to shoulder injury, organizers said on Thursday.
“Sharapova officially withdraws from the 2013 US Open due to a right shoulder bursitis. We wish her a speedy recovery!” the US Open said on Twitter.
Sharapova's agent, Max Eisenbud, told Usa Today Sports that her shoulder has been bothering her since before the French Open in May.
A statement from tournament referee Bryan Earley reads that Sharapova’s withdrawal from the 2013 US Open results in Agnieszka Radwanska becoming the No. 3 seed in women’s singles and the seeded players below each move up one position. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova becomes the No. 32 seed.
