An international military history festival centering on the Battle of Gumbinnen took place in the town of Gusev, as Gumbinnen is now known, in Russia’s Kaliningrad Region on August 24 and 25.
The World War I battle, which ended in victory for the Russian Army, was recreated by upward of 300 reenactors who came from various regions of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Poland and the Czech Republic.
The festival was held in the town of Gusev – known as Gumbinnen prior to 1946 – and was one of the most spectacular events in a larger nationwide program of events marking the upcoming centennial of the outbreak of World War I.
The large-scale event took place on Sunday, with reenactors playing the parts of Russian guard and army infantrymen, cavalrymen, artillerymen and Cossack troops, as well as soldiers of the German and Austria-Hungarian army.
The Battle of Gumbinnen was one of the first Russian victories in World War I, and allowed the Imperial Army to advance deep into enemy territory in Eastern Prussia and capture Insterburg (now known as Chernyakhovsk) and other populated areas.
Festival guests could see original armored vehicles, guns and various small arms dating back to the beginning of the 20th century, as well as replicas. Some of the equipment on show was provided by the Mosfilm and Lenfilm movie studios.
