MOSCOW, August 26 (R-Sport) – Samuel Eto’o’s days with Anzhi Makhachkala appear to be over after the Cameroonian striker bid farewell to his teammates after their loss to FC Krasnodar on Saturday, coach Arsen Akayev told R-Sport.
Eto’o is reportedly headed to Chelsea as part of a transfer package for Brazilian midfielder Willian, which was confirmed by both clubs on Sunday.
British media reported over the weekend the 32-year-old Eto’o would accompany Willian out of Dagestan for the bargain price of 2.3 million euros, but his final destination remains unclear.
Eto'o's farewell, however, appears to confirm he won’t take the pitch for Anzhi when they face rivals Terek Grozny in the seventh round of Russian Premier League play on Saturday.
“He said goodbye in the locker room after our last match, had a word with each player and the coaches,” Akayev said.
Eto’o and Willian are set to become the latest casualties of Anzhi’s massive roster shuffle since slashing its budget dramatically at the start of the season to focus on developing local talent. The club has already offloaded seven first-team players.
Anzhi is winless in six Russian Premier League matches this season.
