MOSCOW, September 7 (RIA Novosti) – Germany has become the 12th nation to sign a declaration of support for strong measures to be taken by the international community against Syria over its alleged use of chemical weapons recently in the civil war there, AFP reported Saturday citing German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle.
“Chancellor Merkel and I made a decision to support the joint declaration,” Westerwelle said.
The text of the declaration, signed by eleven nations - Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Spain, Turkey and the United States - was released by the White House Friday. The eleven states made a joint statement of support for strong action against Syria at the G20 Summit in St. Petersburg on Friday
Germany thus becomes the fifth EU state to have signed the declaration in support of the United States taking action against Syria despite the absence of a UN mandate.
President Obama has returned to the United States, and will seek to convince Congress next week to vote to approve the use of armed force against Syria.
High-ranking officials from Obama’s administration will brief the House of Representatives on the president’s request to use military force in Syria in a closed session Monday evening, Politico said on Friday.
