MOSCOW, September 12 (RAPSI) – Ukraine has extradited to Russia a suspected killer and member of an extremist group thought to have been involved in the killing of a judge, the Russian Prosecutor General's office reported Thursday.
The suspect, Mikhail Volkov, has already been sent to a Russian detention facility, the Prosecutor General’s office said.
Volkov, suspected of being a member of a nationalist group known as BORN (Battle Organization of Russian Nationalists), is wanted in Russia on charges of murder, arms trafficking, and membership of an extremist organization. Russia put him on an international wanted list this April, and on May 10 he was detained in the Ukrainian capital Kiev by the local security services.
An extradition ruling was made on July 18. Volkov appealed the decision, but the court dismissed his appeal.
Right-wing nationalist group BORN is suspected by investigators of having been involved in several high-profile crimes, including the murders in Moscow of Judge Eduard Chuvashov and lawyer Stanislav Markelov.
Judge Chuvashov was shot dead in the stairwell of his Moscow apartment in 2010. He had previously conducted the trials of several BORN members and sentenced them to long terms of imprisonment.
Lawyer Stanislav Markelov was shot dead in Moscow on January 19, 2009. According to investigators, Markelov was murdered for his active participation in an anti-fascist movement.
