NEW DELHI, September 15 (RIA Novosti) – India successfully conducted a second test flight of an Agni-5 long-range ballistic missile able to carry a nuclear warhead, NDTV television channel has reported.

The missile was launched from Wheeler Island, in the Bay of Bengal, off the Odisha coast, at 08.43 a.m. local time. India previously successfully tested Agni-5 in April 2012.

Agni-5 is a three-stage missile designed to carry a 1.5-ton warhead with a range of 5,000 kilometers (3,100 miles). It has been dubbed “China-killer” by media as it is capable of hitting major Chinese cities such as Beijing.

The development of Agni-5 began in 1983. More tests are to be conducted before the missile is ready for deployment, most likely in 2017, the report said.

New Delhi is already working on Agni-6, which will have a longer range, The Times of India reported.
