Russia placed second after the United States in the number of confidential information leaks globally in the first half of the current year, an information security company said Friday.

MOSCOW, September 20 (RIA Novosti) – Russia placed second after the United States in the number of confidential information leaks globally in the first half of the current year, an information security company said Friday.

InfoWatch registered a total of 496 leaks in the first half of the year, 18 percent more than in the same period last year, company CEO Natalya Kaspersky told a conference in Russia, Digit.ru reported.

The United States accounted for 62.9 percent of all leaks, she said. A total of 42 leaks were registered in Russia, up 27 percent year-on-year, followed by the UK with 41 cases, Kaspersky said. The figures were based on InfoWatch's own database, which its experts have been updating since 2004.

InfoWatch's database includes information leaks that have occurred in organizations through inadvertent or intentional actions by their employees, and that have been reported in the media or other publicly available sources. This means that the database only includes a small proportion (no more than 1 percent to 5 percent) of the actual leaks that occurred worldwide, the company said in a statement.

Last year, a total of 934 confidential information leaks were reported in the media worldwide, Kaspersky said, adding that the proportion of accidental leaks was steadily decreasing, representing 38 percent of the total. She said the majority of leaks (89.4 percent) involved personal data.
