ROSTOV-ON-DON, September 21 (RIA Novosti) – A police captain in southern Russia gave his wife a gift with a history: a cell phone he had stolen from the scene of a homicide, police say.
The captain, who had served in the police force for more than 10 years, allegedly stole the phone in March from a crime scene he had been called to in the Tatsinsky district of the Rostov Region where a body with knife wounds had been discovered.
“Using his professional position, during the inspection of the crime scene, he took the mobile phone of the murder victim,” regional police said in a statement on their website Saturday.
A police spokeswoman told RIA Novosti that the police captain had given the phone – “a famous brand worth 10,000-20,000 rubles ($300-$600) – to his wife.
The captain has been sacked from the police force and an investigation into abuse of authority is now underway, the statement said.
