BERLIN/MOSCOW, September 22 (RIA Novosti) – German Chancellor Angela Merkel triumphed in the Sunday election as her conservative bloc was on track to score a historic victory, according to the reported preliminary results of the vote.

Exit polls televised by the German TV showed Merkel's Union bloc winning over 42 percent of the vote Sunday. If confirmed, that would be their strongest victory in decades and would give Merkel an absolute majority. In the previous election, her bloc scored with 33.8 percent.

"It's a super result," said Merkel, flashing a broad smile, Reuters reported. "We will do everything together in the next four years to make them successful years for Germany," Merkel was quoted as saying.

French President Francois Hollande congratulated the chancellor with the victory on Sunday evening.

Merkel’s coalition partners from the pro-business Free Democrats were just below the 5 percent minimum level needed to claim seats in German’s lower house, according to the reported estimates.

The Social Democrats trailed well behind Merkel's party won around 26.5 percent, according to reported projections. The environmental Green got 8 percent, while the hard-line Left scored some 8.5 percent, Associated Press reported.
