The 9th Russian Arms Expo 2013 international exhibition opened on Sept. 25 and runs through Sept. 28 in the Urals city of Nizhny Tagil. Organizers say the event features over 400 exhibitors from 50 countries. Russia hopes the exhibition will boost global interest in the country’s arms production – a key export.
The event features live demonstrations of tanks and other military hardware in action, as well as static exhibits.

Delegations from 40 countries are attending and organizers hope the exhibition will wow potential buyers.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Thursday that he hoped to see a large number of contracts concluded at the event.

Medvedev also said Thursday that a lot of the military technology he saw in a restricted-access viewing had already moved “closer to serial production.”
Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin told reporters Wednesday that the state arms procurement program through 2025 will aim to make weapons more “intelligent” and will encourage “unconventional” forms of engagement.

Rogozin said that Russia should develop new weapons systems that are versatile, and can perform in different environments: on the water, underwater, in the air and in outer space.

That would help keep the modern soldier out of the line of fire and increase the number of enemy combatants that can be engaged at any one time, Rogozin said.

Rogozin said that many of these new developments would be revealed to the general public within a year.

Russia’s leading design bureaus were working on target, to deadline, on top-secret modifications, Rogozin said. After a closed viewing on Thursday, Russia’s Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said “each year these exhibitions get more and more interesting,” and praised the country’s arms industry for their new high-tech developments.
