MOSCOW, October 7 (RIA Novosti) – Five aborted fetuses were discovered Monday morning in a dumpster in a city outside Moscow in a finding that the local mayor has called “a tragic event.”
Investigators said the fetuses may have been terminated at around six or seven months into pregnancy. Abortion is illegal in Russia past the third month of pregnancy.
One fetus was discovered in a plastic bag in a waste container in Balashikha, a city east of Moscow, and another four fetuses were discovered in the same place later in the day, the Moscow Region Investigative Committee said.
Valeriya Andreyeva, the commissioner for children's rights in the Moscow region, told RIA Novosti that she would take the investigation under her personal control.
Balashikha mayor Yury Maksimov has called on local witnesses to assist police in their investigation of Monday's discovery, which he said was “a tragic event for the city."
