WASHINGTON, October 8 (RIA Novosti) – A Moscow-based graphic designer’s map has won a public vote to become the new Boston transit system map, but he won’t be seeing much in the way of financial reward, Boston.com has reported.
Mikheil Kvrivishvili’s design was one of six finalists selected by a panel of experts that included Massachusetts Bay Transport Authority (MBTA) employees, plus academics and urban planners Boston.com reported Monday.
The public voted on the final six entries and Kvrivishvili’s map design received 6,837 votes of the 17,045 votes cast and the MBTA declared it the winner on Monday.
In a statement released Monday, the MBTA described the public response as “overwhelming,” and praised Kvrivishvili’s design for adding more information to the map while maintaining an “appealing aesthetic,” resulting in a “more organized” and “cleaner map” that would make it easier for passengers to use the system.
The contest was not without some controversy, as the MBTA offered no prize money for the winning design while claiming all rights to all designs submitted when the contest was announced in April, which angered some designers according to Boston.com.
